Install WorldEdit for your game or server

WorldEdit is an in-game editor for Minecraft Java Edition. On a Paper/Bukkit-compatible server, put the matching plugin build in the server plugins directory. On a supported mod loader, use its matching mod build in that instance’s mods directory. Check the Minecraft version and platform on the official download page, restart and inspect the startup log.

The Java project does not install on Bedrock or Realms. A client installation alone does not give you commands on someone else’s server. Its administrator must install the editor and grant permissions. Schematic Studio provides independent documentation; it does not install or execute WorldEdit.

03 · Tutorial

Commands, permissions and a first practice edit

Enter commands in Minecraft chat, one at a time. Many edits start with two slashes; some tools use one. Help for your installed release is the place to check flags and availability.

Make a backup, choose a tiny practice area and keep other builds outside it. These commands change real blocks. On servers, ask the administrator for the specific permissions needed rather than unrestricted access.

/worldedit version
Identify the installed release when troubleshooting.
//help
Open in-game command help.
04 · Tutorial

Select and inspect the right region

A cuboid uses two opposite corners, including both endpoints. With the selection wand, left-click sets the first corner and right-click sets the second. Position commands are useful when there is no block to click.

Expand changes the boundary without placing blocks. Other shapes include polygonal and cylindrical selections. Return to cuboid mode if an unexpected shape remains selected.

//pos1//pos2
//wand
Get the selection tool, normally a wooden axe.
//pos1 //pos2
Set corners at successive player positions, moving between commands.
//size
Inspect selection dimensions and volume before editing.
//expand 3 up
Extend the selection upward by three blocks.
//sel cuboid
Restore the standard selection mode.
05 · Tutorial

Fill, replace, repeat and move blocks

Set fills the selected region. Replace changes matching blocks inside it. Walls creates the vertical sides. Test each operation in a small selection so its scope is easy to inspect.

Stack repeats a region, while move relocates its contents. Direction and selection size matter. These operations can replace blocks outside the original selection; start with one repetition.

//set minecraft:stone
Replace all contents of the practice selection with stone.
//replace minecraft:stone minecraft:stone_bricks
Change only matching stone to stone bricks.
//walls minecraft:glass
Create glass on the vertical sides.
//stack 1 east
Repeat the region once to the east.
//move 2 up
Move its contents two blocks upward after checking the destination.
06 · Tutorial

Copy, cut, rotate and reflect

Copy stores a selection in the session clipboard and remembers your relative position. This is the paste anchor. Stand at a recognizable point, such as an entrance, before copying. Cut also removes the selected world blocks.

Rotation and reflection transform clipboard data without immediately changing the world. Copy again or reload a saved file for a clean starting point. Ordinary copying does not imply every entity and biome is included.

//copy//paste
//copy
Copy relative to your current position.
//rotate 90
Rotate the clipboard 90 degrees.
//flip east
Reflect the clipboard along the east-west axis.
07 · Tutorial

Paste with the correct anchor and air behavior

Move to the intended anchor before pasting. A normal paste includes air and can erase terrain inside the clipboard volume. Skipping air still replaces existing solid blocks with clipboard blocks.

The -o option uses the original copied location. Clipboard rotations persist, so check the transform before repeating a paste.

//paste
Paste the whole clipboard, including air.
//paste -a
Skip air from the clipboard.
//paste -o
Use the original copied location.
08 · Tutorial

Save and load schematic files

After copying, save the clipboard for reuse. Loading replaces clipboard data; it does not build anything until you paste.

Typical directories are plugins/WorldEdit/schematics for the plugin and config/worldedit/schematics for a mod. Configuration can change them. Transfer files to the actual server instance. Use the installed format list: renaming .litematic to .schem does not convert it.

//schem save courtyard
Save the current clipboard.
//schem list
List available local schematics.
//schem formats
Inspect supported formats.
//schem load courtyard.schem
Load an existing file before pasting.
09 · Tutorial

Choose materials with patterns

Patterns describe what an edit places: a block, an explicit block state or a weighted mixture. Percentages express random weights, not exact totals in a small wall.

Unspecified states use defaults. Check block IDs and state properties against your game version. Extensions from other plugins may not exist in standard WorldEdit.

//set 75%minecraft:stone,25%minecraft:andesite
Use a weighted stone and andesite mixture.
//set minecraft:oak_log[axis=y]
Place logs with an explicit vertical axis.
10 · Tutorial

Restrict which blocks may change

A mask chooses eligible positions; a pattern chooses replacement material. Global and brush masks combine. Contradictory masks can make an edit appear broken.

Clear temporary restrictions when finished. If no blocks change, check old masks as well as the selection.

//gmask minecraft:stone
Restrict applicable edits to existing stone positions.
//gmask
Clear the global mask.
11 · Tutorial

Sculpt terrain with brushes

Brushes attach an action to a held item. Choose a dedicated tool, a small radius and test one click. A brush targets the world you point at; having a selection does not automatically restrict it.

Settings include material, mask, size and range. Smooth brushes can remove details. Unbind a finished tool to prevent accidental edits.

r/brush sphere stone 4
/brush sphere minecraft:stone 2
Bind a radius-two stone sphere brush.
/mask minecraft:grass_block
Restrict this brush to matching grass-block positions.
/brush none
Unbind the held brush tool.
12 · Tutorial

Generate shapes and foundations

Generators create shapes around a placement position, normally your player position, without requiring a region selection. A cylinder can start a tower; a hollow sphere can provide a dome.

The editor also supports forests and expression-based shapes. Start small and inspect the placement position before increasing dimensions. These are real edits.

//cyl minecraft:stone_bricks 4 3
Create a radius-four cylinder three blocks high.
//hsphere minecraft:glass 4
Create a small hollow glass sphere.

Navigation, utilities and advanced reference

Navigation helpers can move you through levels of a structure when permitted. Learn them in a clear practice area. Utility operations, sessions and configured backup snapshots have separate behavior and prerequisites; use the linked references before applying them to a live world.

/ascend
Move to a suitable level above.
/descend
Move to a suitable level below.
14 · Tutorial

Undo, verify and troubleshoot

Undo and redo use recorded history, not a full world backup. Secondary changes such as flowing liquids or later player activity may remain. Retention depends on configuration. Stop after an unexpected operation and inspect first.

Unknown command: check installation and permissions. Shifted paste: check anchor and transforms. No changed blocks: inspect bounds and masks. Missing file: check directory, instance and format. Stalled edit: reduce the selection and ask about server limits. Missing newer or modded blocks: check the game registry and installed mods.

//undo
Undo the most recent recorded edit.
//redo
Reapply an undone edit only when intended.

Percentage block mixes

Put a number and % before each block to weight a random mix. The numbers are relative weights: 60%stone,40%andesite and 3%stone,2%andesite give the same 60/40 result. Build a mix below and copy the command.

  • stone60.0%
  • andesite25.0%
  • cobblestone15.0%

Weights add up to 100, so they read like normal percentages. The result is random per block, so small areas will not match exactly.

//set 60%stone,25%andesite,15%cobblestone

Ready-made mixes

  • //set 60%stone,25%andesite,15%cobblestone
    Natural stone wall
  • //replace stone_bricks 70%stone_bricks,20%cracked_stone_bricks,10%mossy_stone_bricks
    Aged stone bricks
  • //replace grass_block 70%grass_block,20%coarse_dirt,10%podzol
    Forest floor
  • //set 50%gravel,30%coarse_dirt,20%cobblestone
    Gravel path
  • //replace "cobblestone %5" mossy_cobblestone
    A small share: about 5% moss on cobblestone
  • //set 80%oak_planks,20%spruce_slab[type=bottom]
    Weighted with block states
TipFor a small exact share, use the noise mask instead of a weight: //replace "cobblestone %10" mossy_cobblestone changes about 10% of the cobblestone.

Questions and answers

How do percentages work in WorldEdit?

Numbers before blocks are relative weights, not exact percentages. //set 5%dirt,15%stone gives about 25% dirt and 75% stone, because 5 is a quarter of 5 + 15. Weights that add up to 100 read like normal percentages. The result is random, so a small area will not match the ratio exactly.

How do I replace only a small percentage of blocks?

Use the random noise mask with the percent sign before the number, combined with a block mask: //replace "cobblestone %10" mossy_cobblestone changes roughly 10% of the cobblestone. A single weighted pattern such as 5%dirt is not valid on its own.

What is the difference between //set and //replace?

//set fills every position in the selection, including air. //replace only changes blocks that match the first argument, or every non-air block when you leave it out.

Why does //paste put my build in the wrong place?

WorldEdit pastes relative to where you stood when you copied. Stand at the same point of the new site, or use //paste -o to paste at the original coordinates. Check //rotate and //flip, which stay applied to the clipboard.

How do I paste without erasing terrain?

Use //paste -a so air in the clipboard is skipped. Solid clipboard blocks still replace what is there.

Where are WorldEdit schematics saved?

plugins/WorldEdit/schematics on a Bukkit or Paper server, and config/worldedit/schematics for the mod. Use //schem list to see what the installation finds.

Can WorldEdit load .litematic files?

No. Standard WorldEdit reads Sponge .schem and legacy MCEdit .schematic. Convert a .litematic to .schem first, for example with the free Schematic Studio converter.

How do I undo a WorldEdit mistake?

Run //undo, or //undo 5 for several steps. Undo uses your session history, not a backup, so make a world backup before large edits.

Does WorldEdit work on Bedrock or Realms?

No. WorldEdit is for Minecraft Java Edition servers and modded clients. Bedrock and Realms need other tools.

Is FastAsyncWorldEdit (FAWE) the same?

FAWE is a separate fork for Paper servers that keeps most WorldEdit commands and adds its own. Most commands in this guide work in both, but check //help on your server.

How do I select a whole chunk or the full height?

Use //chunk for the chunk you stand in, and //expand vert to stretch any selection to the world height limits.

How do I make a hollow sphere, dome or cylinder?

//hsphere stone 10 makes a hollow sphere, //hsphere -r glass 10 sits on the ground like a dome, and //hcyl stone_bricks 6 20 builds a hollow tower.

Why did nothing change after my command?

Check the selection with //size, clear any global mask with //gmask, and make sure your mask matches existing blocks. Large edits can also hit //limit.

How do I copy entities and biomes?

Add -e for entities and -b for biomes to //copy, //cut and //paste. Without the flags only blocks are copied.

How do I see which blocks are in my selection?

//distr lists every block with its count and percentage; //count stone counts one block type.
